Development and Communications Director

POSITION:
Reports to the Executive Director.
(FT position available)

About Willamette Humane Society
Founded in 1965, the Willamette Humane Society (WHS) serves people and their pets in Marion and Polk County Oregon.
We have a staff of 49 people, and the equivalent in hours of another 25 people through the generous contributions of volunteers. We shelter and serve more than 9,000 animals each year.

WHS is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We are not affiliated with any other local or national animal welfare groups and we receive no government tax dollars or financial support from state or national humane organizations. Our operating budget of $2.6 million is funded by our fees for service and by generous donors through annual and estate gifts.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Development/Communication Director is a combined position responsible for advancing fundraising and resources for the organization with a five person department responsible for general fundraising, direct mail, events, website, marketing, volunteers, and major/planned gifts. A $1million capital campaign is underway to build a spay and neuter clinic and we are at 60 percent of our goal. This senior level position reports to the executive director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a valuable member of the development and management teams, the development and communications director must adhere to and exemplify the organization’s managerial expectations at all times:
• Serve as a role model
• Practice the values of the organization
• Drive continuous improvement
• Practice candor, clarity and commitment in all communications

Primary responsibilities
• Manage and direct the department staff to achieve resource goals and the mission of WHS.

• Produce and work a comprehensive resource development plan for fundraising (annual giving, direct mail, events, major gifts, grants, sponsorships, planned giving) communications (website, advertising, newsletter, media relations) and volunteer resources in alignment with our strategic goals and budget.

• Identify and maintain assessment tools that provide metrics for measuring the success of development programs.

• Collaborate with other WHS directors, managers, and staff to accomplish the organizational mission in areas beyond development activities.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and background:
• BS (MS preferred) in Administration, Business, Marketing, Communications or related field
• Solid fundraising experience developing and implementing fundraising strategies.
• A track record in cultivating, maintaining and obtaining major gifts and corporate sponsorships.
• Management and budget experience for professional staff.
• Experienced champion of compelling communications.
• Solid computer and analytical skills.
• Skilled in handling multiple priorities, setting and achieving goals, and meeting deadlines.
• Capital campaign experience desired.
• Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification desired.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The development and communications director supervises the development, communications, and volunteer programs.

Compensation:
The salary range for this position is $45,200 to $58,800, depending upon experience.
